"Merry Christmas, Amelia Bedelia"
Thursday, November 29, 2007
Seven .... Oh my!!
One more little girl joined us last month. Now we have Seven! For a while I kept picking out too few books at the library and some of us had to share.
Unfortunately I didn't take pictures last week. We tried to decide on a "chapter book" Originally we picked "Judy Moody gets Famous". After I decided to read through the first few chapters I realized it was WAY too advanced. So we are going to meet in the middle and do a long story book. The first book that we are going to read together is "Merry Christmas, Amelia Bedelia". Amelia Bedelia is a great level 2 first reader that uses a lot of play on words. It should be great!
Our last meeting that I took pictures at was on Election Day. So to commemorate we had an open election. The girls grouped together in pairs of 2 and campaigned for "President" and "Vice President".
Here are all of the Campaign signs. There was a tie between Rachel and Sabrina. Sabrina was running for President as well as Rachel. Rachel declared FREE GREEN M&M's for all if elected and Sabrina said that she would be nice to all children.
The next meeting is during the first week of December when we start our "Merry Christmas Amelia Bedelia" book.
Have a great day!

And one more makes 6!
We now have six girls in our book club. The girls are having a blast!!!
our snacks aren't always healthy, but they're good! It's amazing how much a bunch of girls can eat! :)
Today we had a special halloween celebration at our book club meeting. Everyone read their books then we took turns with our second book. We then ate yummy dounts and had a spooky dance party. The girls made up some games on the front lawn then we made door knob hangers.
We're looking forward to our next meeting on Nov. 6th.
Sept. 25th, 2007 Reading, Reading, Reading...
Two weeks ago Sabrina and her friends read 2 books since we gained one more girl. We now have 6 girls in the club and that has proven to be a very hard task to find 6 copies of the same books a the library. Espically when I need six copies of six different books!
So, to remedy that last week the girls read their own individual books, two of them! It was fun reading but it took a very long time since when they read together they help each other sound out words.
This week we have changed it up yet again. The girls all have 1 individual book that they will present to the group and we have one "community" book to read together. Since Halloween is right around the corner I have some crafts for them to do today. So, I will read them a book while they craft.
It has been very fun for both me and the girls at our bookclub meetings.
Last week the girls participated in "Hat Trick for Reading" provided by the local Dential group. We filled out the reading cards and they will all recieve 2 free hockey tickets for the game this weekend. We are planning on going together. I'll be sure to have pic's of that!
This picture shows the girls getting ready to reveal their collection. We read "collecting" and decided to do an extra curricular project with that book. They had a great time. Sabrina collected play money. Caitlin collected plastic reptiles ...

A fun day at the August Bookclub Meeting!
Welcome to Sabrina's First Grade Bookclub!
This club was started to help Sabrina with her reading and reading comprehension. It also helps her and her sister develop friends of their own. My girls are a mere 16 months apart, today they are 6.5 and 5 years old. When we would have play dates over at our house there was always a lot of fighting over who would play with whom. So I decided to create a positive space for each of them. Thus Sabrina has her First Grader Bookclub and Lilly has her own club. This space is for Sabrina and her club mates.
The girls are getting a lot of great reading time in during our meeting. They are using their skills to sound out words. They are also looking at pictures to get an idea of what the sentences are all about before reading the words.
We had fun this past meeting. The girls read a book named "I need you". We used examples from that book to make our own original book pages.
Our meeting meet every other week. On the "off" weeks Sabrina delivers new library books to everyone to review and bring with them for bookclub. Sabrina has a great time going to the library and trying to find 4 copies of 4 different books. Then we deliver the books to all of the girls houses and they bring them back for us to return to the library.
Once the girls arrive they settle down with a snack and something to drink, then we get into our reading.
Each meeting we take a vote on which book was our favorite and why. We also talk about the books after reading them to assist with reading comprehension.
This week "Buffa Buffalo" was Meredith's favorite book.
Until next week!
